If you’re a runner and it feels like you’re inhaling air as thick as chowder and running in a vat of the same, you don’t need to look at your calendar to know what day it is. Yup. Yankee Homecoming 5K and 10 Mile Road Race day. Every year, like clockwork, mother nature challenges us as we stand at the starting line and try to convince each other that we’re not crazy or that the heat is not all that bad. Or that the predicted thunderstorm will miss us. Or we remind ourselves of the wonderful runner-friendly Newburyport residents who set up their garden hoses to spray down on us, providing a welcome cooling. Then we start to think about the freeze pops handed to us at the finish with the ends already snipped so we don’t have to tear that plastic apart in a fit of fury. We hear the “BEGIN” sound and we start our journey.

Tonight was more forgiving. The temp was a cooler-than-usual 76 but the dewpoint was near 70, making conditions plenty humid. It felt very warm on the course, and there were fewer hoses than usual to spray us. Nevertheless, the Newburyport residents came out in throngs and cheered us all on as if we were conquering heroes. The last two tenths of a mile, up the Newburyport High School driveway, is a challenging end-of-race hill that makes all runners feel like they are, indeed, conquering heroes. Refreshingly cold water was offered at the finish line and we quickly snatched up the beloved freeze pops as we shuffled on to the nicely-stocked snack tent.

North Shore Striders were well represented in both the 5K and 10-mile races. Though some Striders scored age-group placements, the huge size of many age groups made all finishes noteworthy. Everyone did a superb job and made us proud.

Here are results that Jill graciously compiled. Please let us know if we missed anyone or if corrections need to be made.
