Rice Memorial 5K

April 10, 2017 by Andrew Moore Leave a Comment

Writeup by Linda Desjardins. Firefighter Rice Memorial 5K, Peabody, MA, April 8th, 2017.

It was a blustery morning, feeling more like late October than early April. My Garmin said it was 43 degrees with 19 MPH wind for a wind chill factor of 34. Yes, there was definitely headwind in mile 2, which most of us both noticed and mentioned. It was a real pace-killer, but not so much so that many Striders didn’t earn medal placements in the race. Eight North Shore Striders turned up to duke it out with 318 non-Striders. We had a good representation: Jenny, Cheryl, Maureen, Rosie, Bill, Mike, Armand and Linda D.

A few race annoyances commented on by many resulted from the interference posed by dogs on leashes as well as the abundance of children who randomly stopped and started on the course, turned back to see friends, etc. Is there a Running 101 Courtesy course? There should be! Mike even had to see one runner’s dog poop on the course. The owner did bring a plastic bag. But…sheesh….gimme a break!

The brighter aspects of the race were the clear air, seeing firefighters run in full gear for their fallen comrade, and a general sense of appreciation for our firefighters from the runners and police officers as well who were very present and supportive.

Bill Kobus took gold in 60-69 with a stellar time of 22:42. Mike Pelletier in 70-99 also took gold in a great 29:04. Rosie Keyes raced for silver in the 40-49 age group with an outstanding 25:07. Armand Claveau took the bronze in the 70-99 age group with a commendable 38:46.

Other Striders not earning awards but deserving Kudos: Cheryl Welsh came in 5/22 in 28:40, Linda was 4/7 in 29:31, Maureen tallied in at 35:01 and 11/22, and Jen showed off a strong kick by finishing in 44:51 for 31/35 and improving on her last 5K by 1:09!
