The Winner’s Circle April Fool’s 4 Miler was the second North Shore Striders Grand Prix race, and a lot of our members toed the starting line on March 28.
The only thing “foolish” about this race was the temperature! It’s spring. It’s supposed to be much warmer than the 28 degrees with a wind chill of 23 that it was. It seemed anachronistic to be among runners in winter gear: hats, gloves, tights, and layers. Didn’t we already put that stuff away? Many expected to be casting off their outer layer as they warmed while running; however, on the returning two miles, not a single discarded piece of clothing was seen on the road.
Though it was cold, that only served to make many runners go faster, and as always, the speed demons ran in shorts and singlets, and the top four finished in under 20 minutes. It’s simultaneously wonderful to see the race leaders flying by, but it’s also a tad disappointing for many of us to see how little ground we have covered while we see the soon-to-be winners dashing through their last mile. But for sure, everyone always gives it their best effort whether they’re up front, mid-pack, or bringing up the rear. There were runners with dogs, with jog strollers and some even pushing wheelchairs. There were many folks using the walk/run method and were maintaining healthy paces. There were parents guiding their running children and walkers encouraging each other. There’s just something about a gathering of folks who sign up for races that is comforting and endearing and the whole event creates a feeling of well-being among us all.
Our Striders were no slouches today! There were 318 finishers overall, and we did ourselves proud with our results. Here’s how our eighteen Striders fared in their overall places, times, and age group placements.
