9th Annual Marsha Lemkin 5K
Sunday, November 20, 2011
by Linda Desjardins

Hurricane Irene may have made the runners cool their heels for nearly three months awaiting the Marsha Lemkin 5K postponement; but that didn’t stop the North Shore Striders from heating things up at today’s race under ideal running conditions. Two-hundred people finished the race. Sixteen percent of those crossing the finish line were North Shore Striders. Navy and white singlets were prominent and predominant, and many of them were the background for gold, silver, and bronze medals. Many more Striders were right behind them taking fourths and fifths.

Of the 32 Strider finishers, 10 won age-group honors. The sole gold medal was earned, once again, by Linda Fitzpatrick in the Women 60-69 age group, followed by Bonnie Hallinan and Linda Desjardins. Fourth place went to Nancy Giannone.

The men’s 60-69 age group saw Tom McMahon taking a third and Mike Pelletier and Armand Claveau not far behind taking fourth and fifth respectively. In the 40-49 Women’s age group, Pam Morin raced to second place and Sue Besse finished fourth.

Women’s 50-59 saw two Striders stepping up to take silver and bronze: Jayne Sexton blazed the course for silver and Pattie Clocher grabbed the bronze for her effort.

The 50-59 year old men’s age group also featured fast Striders. Dave Sullivan ran an excellent race and took silver. Lanse Stover and Neil Bernstein, with very solid times, took fourth and fifth, respectively.

Men’s 70-79 Striders did not (never do) disappoint either. Joe Giannone sprinted to silver and George Geis nailed down a solid third.

We all hope the biggest winner today was the Marcia Lemkin Lung Cancer Foundation.

It’s worth noting that several of today’s runners completed the hilly and wind-swept Cape Cod Marathon just three weeks ago, and several others competed in a grueling 50-mile trail race! Strider strength will be put to the test on 12/4 for the Mill Cities Relays, the last club race of the season. Please run or volunteer and then join the celebration at the Claddagh Pub.

Sea to Shining Sea Race
Sunday, September 25, 2011
by Linda Desjardins

The Date? September 25, 2011. The Place? Nahant. The Race? Sea to Shining Sea. The distance? Five Miles. The executive summary? Striders Ruled!

Despite some challenging conditions (76 degrees to start and inching upwards, dew point of 68, sun breaking through the protective clouds right at 10AM – the starting time), Striders just ate up the roads. So many proud moments for so many teammates. The women’s overall winner, great run on a tough day, was Sue Quimby. Martin Tighe was the second male overall and the ageless Linda Fitzpatrick was the third woman finisher.

North Shore Striders absolutely dominated many age groups, and there were plenty of high-fives to share. The medal count? 8 gold, 4 silver, 4 bronze. The breakdown? Martin Tighe won gold and Carl Buxbaum bronze in males 50-59. Rick Johnson won gold in 30-39. George Geis took gold in males 70+, Mike Pelletier earned a bronze in males 60-69.

The women fared equally well. In addition to Sue Quimby’s overall gold, Karen Batt and Alexandra Kay topped their divisions, with Tara McGoff and Nancy Wilson taking home silver. Striders swept women’s 60-69 with Linda Fitzpatrick earning gold, Bonnie Hallinan silver, and Linda Desjardins bronze. In 50-59, Pattie Clocher took silver, Jayne Sexton bronze. In the 40-49 group, Marisol Ficaro raced to gold. Great work everyone.
