it is very difficult to place as an individual with Anita Robboy being the only Strider to finish as high as third in her age group. But team awards were another story. The team of Dan MacAlpine, Neil Bernstein, and Lanse Stover were big money winners as 1st Male Seniors Team.

On the Woman's side, the Senior Women's team of Linda Fitzpatrick, Kathy McPherson (the runner formerly known as Menesale), and Betsy O'Brine was 2nd Female Senior team. Linda Fitzpatrick also led a Strider team to a 3rd place finish in the Female Masters category, combining with Vicky Yee, and Lee Benton. And finally, Linda joined with youngsters Sue Quimby and Kate Gage to form a team that finished in 3rd place (out of 8 teams) in the Female Open category.

Nicie Panetta was the sole returning runner from last year's Gold Medalists in the Women Masters competition. The same tireless North Shore Strider threesome finished 8th in the open category.

In the Men's Open team competition, Seniors Dan MacAlpine and Neil Bernstein and Open Dennis Ryan finished 9th of 15 teams. In the Masters competition, Dan and Neil were joined by Gary Freedman and, despite being a completely Senior Team competing against Masters, finished 3rd of 7 teams.

This year in an attempt at saving money, the Around Cape Ann Race decided to forgo tangible team awards and just "acknowledge the team accomplishments." So don't be asking your teammates to see their shiny new plaques or trophies any time soon.

The most improved Strider in the 25K Race was Jim Logan who lowered his time from last year by over 33 minutes.

Run The Goose 7K
Sunday, September 6, 2010
by Dave Sullivan

GLOUCESTER - I began racing with the Striders in my late 30's and I remember being excited at my first race when I had turned 40, expecting to place higher in the older age group. As it became obvious that there were as many fast 40-year-old men running local races as 30-year-olds, I set my sights on my 50th birthday, a milestone I just passed earlier this year.

The Run the Goose 7K in Gloucester was my first race in this age group, and I'm sad to report that I have at least another 10 years to wait until I can find some success among my peers. (It's slowly dawning on me that the guys beating me in my 30's and 40's are still around to beat me in my 50's!) Luckily, I had veterans George and Carol Geis, and Nancy Wilson in the car with me on the way home as testimony to the potential glories that await the persistent. (Carol and Nancy both won age group awards, and George just missed one today.)

Another way to look at it (age has at least brought me wisdom if not more awards) is that just to run is award enough and we each have our own goals to achieve. For me, this was my first race all year as I have been battling with the effect of acid reflux causing me asthma-like symptoms, so just to show up was an achievement. I assume all who crossed the finish line today have their own stories about what it took to get there and I congratulate you all.

So, back to the results. The O'Neil clan continued their stranglehold on local race results, with 19-year-old Erich finishing first in his age group and second overall. Matriarch Jen was the second woman in her age group to cross the line. Masssage therapist to the fleet of feet, John Gillis was the first male master to finish with senior Rich Tabbut not far behind John.

Other award winners included another racing family juggernaut, Nancy and Guiseppe Giannone, finishing first and third in their respective age groups. Also, Alexandra Kay, from yet another dynasty of racers, the Kay family, was the first female under 20 crossing the line. Veteran Deb Jackson was second after Nancy in their age group. And I mentioned Carol Geis and Nancy Wilson above, both receiving age group awards. So the Striders really acquitted themselves well today on the hilly trails of the Goose.
